Phasmophobia is a detective game where you and up to three other investigators explore different locations, like houses or asylums, to identify the type of ghost haunting the place. Your goal is to gather evidence and then leave.
How to Play
In Phasmophobia, you and your team embark on ghost hunts to determine the exact type of entity haunting a location. To do this, you need to purchase tools such as a camera, crucifix, thermometer, and EMF reader. Each investigator can carry only three items (usually with one slot reserved for a flashlight), so coordination is important. The ghost's interactions with specific items indicate the type of supernatural creature haunting the place. Once you figure out which tools trigger a response, you can either leave or complete optional objectives to earn extra money, which can be used to buy more supplies.
The game features an experience-based progression system. As players gain more XP, they unlock larger maps. While the levels become scarier, they don't necessarily become more difficult, allowing new players to join their experienced friends without problems. The challenge lies in pinpointing the specific haunted room, which takes time to accomplish.
As time passes in the location, paranormal activity intensifies. After five minutes, ghosts start hunting the players, indicated by flickering lights and eerie sounds. With larger buildings, the exits are farther away, forcing players to hide from the ghosts during hunts or attempt to outrun them. The ghosts can also hear players.
Phasmophobia offers an immersive experience through voice recognition. Players can ask the ghost specific questions and receive responses through tools like an Ouija board or radio. Calling out the ghost's name may even increase its activity. A clever use of this mechanic is that if players talk while the ghost is hunting, the ghost can use their voices to track them down. This turns the game into a silent solo adventure, where players hide in closets for small rooms, relying only on the sound of footsteps or their own heartbeat.
